Youth Speaks

Since October 2019 a group of Lower School students have been preparing for the annual Rotary Youth Speaks Competition. This is a formal public speaking competition with a strict set of guidelines and criteria and requires students to work in teams of three to deliver a formal debate to an audience of Rotarians and members of the public.

The first round of the competition was held at Wellington School on Monday 27 January with six teams competing in the intermediate category from Kingsmead School, Court Fields School and Wellington School. All three teams from Kingsmead were fantastic and delivered debates on the subjects of veganism, reality television and fashion. The teams won praise from the judges for their delivery, clarity and team work. Despite tough competition, Kingsmead were awarded the top two places, with students Theo, Maisy and Alfie coming 2nd with their debate on fashion, and students Lara, Lucy and Leona coming 1st with their debate on veganism. Both teams now go through to the next round which takes place at Taunton Academy at the beginning of February.
