Welcome to the Kingsmead School MFL Learning Team.

Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. We aim to develop our young people into confident global citizens of the 21st century who are passionate about languages and realise their importance in our ever-changing world. Our curriculum enables all students to understand and communicate in another language. This is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8), students start their language studies with a carousel of French, German and Spanish in Year 7 and will continue with their preference into Year 8. Current Year 8 study both French and German. Language learning is made vibrant and interesting by using a wide range of teaching and learning styles. We provide lessons which are engaging, challenging and stimulating to students of all abilities and encourage that sense of achievement and satisfaction which comes from successfully communicating in a foreign language. We want all students to discover their potential as individual learners who are open to new experiences, are risk-takers and imaginative thinkers.

At Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11), students are offered the choice of French, German and Spanish. At Kingsmead MFL is part of the core curriculum and all students leave the school with a nationally recognised qualification in at least one modern foreign language. Students can obtain qualifications in two foreign languages by opting to study a second foreign language. Students with two language qualifications are highly sought after and are a rarity in the current labour market.

All language qualifications involve assessment in the four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. According to their ability and progress throughout KS3, we offer a differentiated programme of study and qualifications to our students at KS4. Students follow the Edexcel GCSE course or the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in languages. The GCSE course has a real-world focus with a practical content and a focus on students’ interests. Topics include Media and Culture, Sport and Leisure, Travel and Tourism and Business, Work and Employment. The NVQ in languages was introduced in 2006 at Kingsmead and has been hugely successful. There is no final exam in this portfolio-based course and tasks can be geared towards individual candidates. It is hugely motivating for students to see the completion of assessments throughout the course. Topics include Sport and Leisure, Tourism and Business, Work and Employment.

Classroom teaching is supplemented with visits to France and Germany. Year 7 students have the opportunity to take part in a Study Visit to either St. Martin de Bréhal in France or Bad Ems in Germany. They spend 5 days in a youth hostel and can really see the foreign language in action. In Years 8 and 9, students can get involved in the German Exchange. With a week living with a German family, language skills can be tried, tested and improved – an invaluable experience! Years 9 and 10 Spanish students can spend a week in Spain to imbed their newly acquired language.

Every year we welcome Foreign Language Assistants (FLA) from France and Germany who take part in lessons to develop students’ spoken language skills. Our FLAs are invaluable, not only in demonstrating an authentic accent but also in helping students to understand the culture of their home nation.

The learning team has organised the opportunity for students to participate in a Eurovision song contest, a cross-curricular project on castles and controlled assessment preparation through the School’s Challenge Days.
