Welcome to the Kingsmead School History Learning Team.
At Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8), students investigate a wide range of themed historical topics, covering the years 1066 to 1945. All activities and assessments are designed to engage and inspire, whilst at the same time laying key foundations for progression on to Key Stage 4. Students have 3 hours of History lessons per fortnight and are taught in tutor groups.
At Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11), students currently work towards the Edexcel Certificate in History. This is a varied and challenging specification, which allows students to learn about topics such as: Changes in Medicine 1845-1945; Development of dictatorship in Germany, 1918-45; Dictatorship and conflict in Russia 1924-53; The USA 1917-29. Each topic is worth 25% of their final GCSE and it is examined with two final papers at the end of Year 11.
The team believes strongly in enhancing learning beyond the classroom so we have organized trips including: visits for Year 7 to Caerphilly and Chepstow Castle, taking GCSE students to Exeter to investigate the impact of the Blitz and to London to explore the collections at the Imperial War Museum, the Hunterian Museum of Surgery and the Science Museum. We also take an active role in the School’s Challenge Day system. Here we have been part of days devoted to marking the Centenary of the First World War, and to investigating the genius of the Enigma Machine.
At Kingsmead we certainly believe that studying the past will brighten your future!
