Food Technology & Catering
Welcome to the Kingsmead School Food Technology & Catering learning team.
At Key Stage 3 (Year 7 & 8) students prepare and cook a variety of dishes related to healthy eating, learn about safety & hygiene in the kitchen and investigate where our food comes from through home learning projects. They complete 2 rotations and all home learning is set on Firefly.
Key Stage 4 students are studying WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering. There are 2 Units of work; Unit 1 The Hospitality and Catering Industry & Unit 2 Hospitality and Catering in Action.
Unit 1 is a written exam taken in June of Year 11. Students learn about the different types of providers within the hospitality and catering industry, the legislation that needs to be followed and the personal safety of all of those involved in the business, staff and customers. You will learn about the operation of hospitality and catering establishments and the factors affecting their success. The knowledge and understanding gained, enables you to respond to issues relating to all factors within the hospitality and catering section and provide you with the ability to propose a new provision that could be opened in a location to benefit the owner and the local community.
Unit 2 is an internal controlled assessment. You will gain knowledge of the nutritional needs of a range of client groups for you to plan nutritional dishes to go on a menu. You will learn and develop safe and hygienic food preparation, cooking and finishing skills required to produce a variety of dishes that could be sold to the public in a catering establishment.
Students will gain an overview of the hospitality and catering industry and the type of job roles that may be available to assist them in making choices about progression.
