An internationally focussed school preparing students for international lives in the 21st Century.
FRENCH
We have a regular annual home to home exchange with Le College du Val d’Oudon in Le Lion D’Angers. Le Lion D’Angers is also the twinning town for Wiveliscombe and many families have strong links with this area.
FRENCH STUDY VISIT
While half of year 7 go to Germany for their Curriculum enrichment week the other half go to France with their tutors and teachers. This year the group will be travelling to Normandy for a weeks stay at a hostel/hotel.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY NOTE
Kingsmead is committed to equality of opportunity and we strive to ensure that no student is barred from any of the above opportunities on financial grounds. We work very hard to raise external income to ensure that all students can go on these trips.
GERMAN
Kingsmead has had long standing links with Germany as a result of German being one of the two principal foreign languages taught in the school.
We have a regular annual home to home exchange with Albert-Schweitzer Gymnasium in the Sauerland a rural area close to the Ruhr. The Gymnasium (school) is an 11-19 Grammar School of about 900 students and English is studied by all students.
GERMAN STUDY VISIT
We take all of our Year7 students to either France or Germany during their Curriculum Enrichment week at the end of July. This is to give all students an opportunity to begin to appreciate the culture of the country whose language they are studying and to practise some of those early words and phrases. The study visit to Germany stays in a small hotel in Rhens am Rhein in the Rhine valley. The Year 7 students are always accompanied by their tutors as well as Language staff.
ZAMBIA
Since 1999 Kingsmead has had a thriving educational partnership with two schools in the Copperbelt in northern Zambia in Africa.
Following a brief initial visit to the UK by the Headteacher of Mukuba Boys Secondary School in Kitwe, the Headteacher of Kingsmead led a party of eight teachers back to Zambia to establish a firm partnership between Mukuba Boys School and Helen Kaunda Girls Secondary School.
The partnership involves:
A biennial exchange of students. The first Zambian group came to Kingsmead in July 2000 and the first group of Kingsmead students returned in July 2001. In September 2002 the 2nd group of 12 Zambian students took part in a highly successful exchange and students from Kingsmead returned in July 2003.
Regular exchanges of teachers. Ten of Kingsmead’s teachers have now been to Zambia and a similar number of Zambian teachers have visited the UK to exchange ideas and resources.
Provision of educational resources for the Zambian schools. One container of resources has already been sent to Kitwe.
Financial support for Zambian students who are at risk of not being able to continue their education especially through the death of relatives as a result of the AIDS crisis. The Kingsmead International Trust a registered charity has been set up to support this work and other aspects of the international dimension of the school.
